Have you been wondering what the gluten free staples are?! I've got you covered! In this post I will let you know what are good staples to have if you plan on going gluten free!

Are you in the process of reconstructing your pantry? Don't worry! The process is very slow, and I've equipped you with the basics below.

  • Start Slow: Not only are the ingredients expensive, some can be hard to find if you don't have stores like Health Foods or Trader Joe's nearby. Once you start to look, you will be amazed how many of these ingredients are in grocery stores near you!
  • Read, Read, Read: The more you read the more you will know! Gluten free blogs and sites such as celiac.net can help inform you. Believe it or not, there is also gluten free magazines!

Lets start with the basics, as you may or may not know, regular wheat flour is in bread, pizza, cookies, crackers, pasta, etc. In order to make alot of my recipes, you need alot of different types of flours, for many different recipes! Here are the flours in my pantry:

  • White rice
  • Brown rice
  • Sorghum
  • Amaranth
  • Corn
  • Millet
  • Teff
  • Garbanzo Flour
  • Oat
  • Quinoa
  • Gluten Free Oats- this isn't really a flour but it is a good thing to have on hand.
As you can see, that's alot! You will also need an all purpose mix. You have a few options for this. You could buy it (Bobs Red Mill works) or make your own! My recipe is below:

4 cups Garbanzo
4 cups Sorghum
3 cups Arrowroot starch
Whisk together, and there ya go! Couldn't be simpler!

You will also need some starches. The starches in my pantry are:

  • Tapioca
  • Arrowroot
  • Corn
  • Potato

Since gluten has been removed, you've taken out the "glue" in baked goods. The following ingredients act as a glue:

  • Xanthan gum
  • Guar gum
Now that we've gone over the basic ingredients, lets go through snacks, breakfast ideas, etc!

Breakfast- Now that you're gluten free, you many not be able to eat Captain Crunch, but you still have many options! Here are my favorites below:

  • Cinnamon Chex- this one tastes like your average sugar cereal. One of my favorite gf cereals.
  • Corn and Rice Chex- plain, and slightly bland, but great texture
  • Corn Flakes- taste differs depending on brand, but overall yummy!
  • Arrowhead Mills Organic Maple Buckwheat Flakes- great taste, excellent plain or with milk. Great texture also.
  • Arrowhead Mills Organic Oat Bran Flakes- OK, not as tasty as Buckwheat, but exceptional.
  • Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice- tastes very similar to rice crispy...this is a good thing:)
If your not a cereal person, you can eat oatmeal, eggs, or milk/yogurt!

Its amazing how many snack options there are! Some of my favorites are below:

  • Enjoy Life Double Chocolate Brownie Cookie- its a chocolate brownie cookie, nuff' said
  • Rice Cakes-you can get plain, or flavored. I like plain with jam on top.
  • Corn Chips
  • Cereal
  • Popcorn
  • Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips- I taste no difference from these (dairy free) to the regular ones
  • Millet Chips

I hope this helps you start this life style, it truly is an adventure.

P.S-
Leave a comment on your favorite gluten free snack or cereal! I would love to hear!!
